On April 4,1960 Elvis Presley recorded one of his biggest hits
Are
You Lonesome Tonight? I believe that the reason this recording
was such a success is that so many people can relate to being lonely. In 1950,
less than 10% of American households were made up of just one person;
now the number is 27%. Today we use the internet, cell phones and
computers to stay connected. The people who live miles apart in rural
areas feel closer than people who live in an apartment complex.
Several years ago I read about a man who placed a very interesting ad
in the paper. He said for $50 he would talk on the phone to anyone
that wanted to call and just talk. For one-half hour, he would listen
to complete strangers because these people had no one else to talk
to. Amazingly, hundreds of people contacted him.
Everyone feels lonely from time to time but loneliness can motivate
us to change our lives. The Bible tells us that if you want to have
friends, you must show yourself as friendly. Simply stated, if you
are lonely, take the initiative and friend someone. One of the best
ways is to be involved at church. When you attend a Bible-study,
volunteer in your congregation, pray with others or work
shoulder-to-shoulder on a church project it involves you in the
family of God.
Don’t stand around feeling lonely. Find someone to bless
today.
