During the Civil War, if you were drafted in the North you could always hire a substitute if you could afford it.
Starting in 1862, the U.S. government allowed this escape from military
service on the theory that, so long as each name drawn from the wheel
produced a man, it made no difference whether the drafted person or one
hired to take his place. As the War wore on and there was a shortage of men, only the very rich could afford the price for a "substitute."
When we think of salvation, we often talk in terms that Jesus died for us. That is true, Jesus died to provide eternal life for us. But we often forget that Jesus took our place on the cross. Jesus who knew no sin died for us who were totally sinful. In the truest sense, Jesus was our Substitute. He died not only for us but He also died in our place!
The difference between Jesus and the Civil War substitute was Jesus (Our Substitute) paid the price to take YOUR place.
