How Is the Service?

Years ago, we used a term for our elected officials - "public servant." Basically, that meant that they were elected by the people to represent them in the political arena. They were elected not to fulfill their on agenda, not to find a "cushy" job but to do the will of the people. The average American has a very low opinion of government, just ask them. And I believe the reason our government has failed its people is they have forgotten that they are there to serve. I am not saying that they are all corrupt (though some are).  I am not saying they are bad people. But they have forgotten the reason they were elected. The purpose of this blog is not to bash our representative but to share from God's Word, the purpose of government.

  1. The role of a civil leader is to enable government to establish justice and maintain civil order. They are accountable to God for the faithful discharge of their ministry responsibilities. A person's behavior in office is positively affected by knowing that he must answer to God. In Romans 13:3-4 elected officials are called "Servants of God."
  2.  Protection not provision. The Scriptural view of the role of government is to protect mankind. Scripture shows that civil government is charged with a limited responsibility to protect life and property. People who are in need of temporary help are directed to look primarily to the family ( 1 Timothy 5:3-8), secondarily to the church (1 Timothy 5:9-16), or finally to neighbors in the community (Leviticus 19:9-10).
God never intended government to intrude into our personal lives e.g. decide what kind of food we should eat, what type of toilet to install in our homes (water saving), what type of light bulb we should buy, the list is endless and growing each day.

Is government evil? Not the way God designed it. But man is always striving to be in control instead of being a 'public servant.'
