Baggage

A former Secret Service agent said that President Carter "tried to project the image of himself as a man of the people by carrying his own luggage when traveling. When he was running for President, Carter would carry his own bags (which were empty) while the press was in sight but once in private he would ask the Secret Service to carry his luggage.

Unfortunately, many are still carrying their own baggage and they are not empty.  We bring luggage packed with damage emotions from our past.  Our suitcases are jammed with guilt. Our overnight bags are loaded with resentment.

But just as the Secret Service carried the President’s bags, God wants us to turn over those things that are weighing us down. Jesus invites us to turn over all our “baggage” to Him and He will give us rest. Matthew 11:28

The story is told of a man walking down a dusty road with a very heavy suitcase, when a man drove up in a horse drawn wagon. The driver seeing the man struggling with his load invites the man to ride with him and the traveler gladly accepts. When the man is seated, he puts his heavy suitcase on his lap. The driver tells him to put his load back in the wagon and the man replies, “You are too kind to give me a ride, I cannot ask you to carry by load as well.”  Does that sound like you when God ask to carry your load?
