Taste and See

One of the Scripture verses that we unfortunately have misinterpreted is Proverbs 22:6 – “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.”  We have understood that to mean bring your child to church and Sunday school every Sunday and prayer meeting every Wednesday and this will assure their salvation when they become an adult. Sadly, many have not seen that reality. No one has ever come to saving faith just by coming to a building on a consistent basis.

The correct interpretation centers on a mother trying to wean her child from breast milk to solid food. She would take soft, palatable food and place it on her finger. She would put her finger in the baby’s mouth and the baby would receive their first taste of solid food! The goal was to present food in such a manner as to make it appealing to their taste buds.

The spiritual goal for our children is basically the same. We are to present Jesus Christ to them in such a manner that they find Him ‘appealing.’ Parents [and grandparents] should be so much in love with Jesus that it shows and our children would desire that kind of relationship too.
