Personally there is nothing more discouraging to me than
failure. It takes the ‘wind out of my sails.’
It frustrates me. I am what might be called ‘mechanically challenged’,
which means I am not gifted in repairing things but that does not stop me from
trying.
The truth is that we all fail at times. We did not learn to
walk with the first step we took. We probably swallowed a lot of water when we
were learning to swim. But we stayed with it and we finally mastered the skill.
Think of all the people who were considered “failures” in the Bible. Noah was a
drunk. Samson had a problem with lust. Peter denied the Lord. Moses could not
control his anger. But in the end, they succeeded.
I never thought of Psalm 103:4 in this light. “For he knows how weak we are; he remembers
we are only dust.” God knows the intent and desire of our hearts. This does
not give us a license to sin and God will not overlook sin but He does
understand and He is merciful. Failure is failing and not getting back up. Remember, Moses was once a basket case.
