From almost the beginning of time, man has attempted to achieve eternal life. Immorality has been a popular subject in fictional writings and movies. In Star Trek you find Q, an immortal that does not live in time or space. In the television series Highlander, there are a group of people called immortals that cannot die, unless they are beheaded. They continue to live century after century.
If you are a science fiction buff, you have seen countless movies about space travelers who have their bodies put into "suspended animation" during the long flight to some distant planet. Scientists today tell us that they can "freeze" our bodies after death and revive them at a later date when a cure for their terminal disease is found. The term is "cryonics." How cryonics "works"
But do you think living forever here on earth would be as wonderful as we think? Fiction writers and movies have portrayed immorality as a curse as well as a blessing. How would you feel watching those you love growing older and dying while you remain the same age? Think of living for centuries with all the sad experiences of life. Think how bored you will become with life. After all, life is always the same no matter what age you live in. Ecclesiastes 1:9
While some people think eternal life is a myth or fiction, the Word of God is very clear that the reality is everyone will live forever; someplace. But I am getting ahead of myself. In my next blog post, we will explore some mistaken notions some Christians have about eternal life.
