One misconception is that eternal life begins when we die. But the Bible says that eternal life begins the moment that you trust Jesus Christ as your personal Savior. "And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life." 1 John 5:11-13. The underlined phrases were written in the present tense meaning when we accept Christ, we presently have eternal life.
Another misconception is that eternal life is just an extension of this present life. But once again the Bible clears up this idea. "Our dying bodies must be transformed into bodies that will never die; our mortal bodies must be transformed into immortal bodies. Then, when our dying bodies have been transformed into bodies that will never die,[a] this Scripture will be fulfilled: “Death is swallowed up in victory" I Cor. 15:53 -54
One last point: Some think that you cannot know for sure if you possess eternal life but will have to wait until death before we know. But we have this assurance; "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life." 1 John 5:13
Since eternal life is God's idea (and gift) I am certain that it is so much more than we can imagine. 1 Cor. 2:9
